16: Priorities

My Product Manager-type role has taught me a lot in the relatively short time I've been doing it. The skill of effective prioritisation is up there as the most valuable.
In my previous role (within the same company), it was easy to put forward a list of things and say they were all important. But since being promoted, and being the person who receives the requests, the attitude I have to take is in stark contrast to just a few months ago.
I have to weigh up requests alongside others that are already existing and make a call, not everything can be equality important. Case in point, we're working with an outside company to write some automations to help with some issues we're having. As part of the scope of work there are three different automations that they'll be doing.
Yes, they're all important, but when we take into account that we have a deadline plus there is only one resource working on the project, there is no way everything will be done simultaneously. Prioritisation is necessary. So I had to make the call on what he should work on. And I made that choice because by him completing that first, we could actually get a functioning product out to the test users. The other automations just have to wait until this one is complete.
It is what it is.
