18: What To Share

This post is part of my Dailies collection. You can see more here

On a recent doomscroll session I came across this piece by Simon Sarris.

It got me thinking: why is it that so many of us only choose to show one side of ourselves on our social media (in this case X)? We all have different interests, but what I've noticed is that people X accounts tend to only be about one thing. Perhaps its the fact that I'm following mostly indie hackers, and all they do is post about building their startups.

If I'm not mistaken, gurus™ tend to say that your X account needs to focus on one thing, because it helps people make an association. That is BS. Having said that, though, I often hesitate to post about things like sports because I think that none of the people who follow me would be interested in that. When you think about it, this is pathetic from me. It is my account, why am I worried about what my followers think? Why does that thought have so much power over me? I don't know. I think it stems from wanting to "build an audience". Thats all well and good but I am approaching things from the angle of posting to please them. Completely backward.

I say all that to say this: humans are multi-faceted, and we should embrace this. From now on, I will be less guarded about what I post. So look forward to tweets about the psychological torture Man United put me through on a weekly basis.
