21: Meetings
Doing meetings well is a skill. Being in this new Product Manager role, I’m in a lot of meetings and it’s becoming very apparent that we don’t do meetings well at my company.
One of the things I’m coming across a lot is the tendency to get off topic and how easily that happens. If I called herring, I try to counteract this tendency by keeping the goal of the meeting front and centre and steering the conversation back on track when necessary. I’m getting better at doing this, while being diplomatic.
I was having a conversation with a colleague the other day about this very topic, and we ended up discussing how important it is to learn how to ask good questions. This is one area I need to seriously level up, because the benefits are not solely work related, it’s just a good life skill to have.
