05: Golf

This weekend I played 9 holes with some guys from work. A great time was had by all. Golf is the most infuriating sport. Why? Because its mandatory to have good technique. How do you get good technique? You have to practice.
Good ol' fashioned reps. No other way.
Before moving to Australia, I played on a golf course one time, and had been to a driving range maybe 20 times. Whenever the golf was on, I would make sure that I watched it though. Throughout my childhood I played a lot of sport. Cricket, hockey, basketball, football (soccer). So when I decided to take up playing golf in my 30s, I thought I'd pick it up easily...
How wrong I was. Shot after shot after shot I'd slice. With every shot I'd feel the anger build. My struggles with golf highlight my dislike of not being good at things. I really hate the struggle. But at least once a round, I will pull off an amazing shot and that is enough to bring me back next time.
Some lessons from a teaching pro are required to get my swing somewhat repeatable. I know I will never actually be good at this game, I just don't have enough time to practice. All I ask is to have a swing that makes a decent contact and goes in the general direction I'm aiming. That'll make playing rounds infinitely more enjoyable.
