06: I Get It Now

Last year I got promoted to do what is in essence an Internal Product Manager, although my title sounds a lot more fancy than that (I'm not complaining). For those who are reading this but aren't sure, a Product Manager sits between software developers and the client acts as the conduit to ensure things are being built to what the client needs. Usually the software is being used by paying members of the public but in my case, it is internal software.
It's a cool job, perfect for someone like me who is tech-minded, but not a fully fledged dev. Anyway, I was in a meeting today related with someone from the dev team and it struck me: building software is really difficult. People are not good at explaining what it is they want. So you say one thing, and the devs might come back to you two weeks later with something completely different. Odd how that works. For all our advancements, we still haven't been able to perfect the art of information transfer in this way.
From a personal perspective, as someone who is looking to launch small tools and SaaS, it highlights the importance of getting user feedback as soon as possible to ensure that you are on the right track.
Food for thought.
