08: Taking A Different Approach
This post is part of my Dailies collection. You can see more here
Ok, so I have been dabbling with code on and off for years. I start, do a bit, then let the momentum lapse. My ultimate aim is to build my own product(s) and eventually have something that can earn me good living.
But I think I've been approaching things sub-optimally. To date, my approach has been to go straight to making products that I can get to market. Here is where I think I'm going wrong: I'm not following my curiosity. Instead of jumping straight to the monetisation phase, I feel like I need to give myself the room to experiment with the basics, and gradually build a baseline set of skills. At the moment, I don't think I'm working from a solid base at all.
I've been going back and forth in my head because this might seem like another way of procrastinating to not release anything. It may well be, we'll see.
Now, I know that building distribution is important. But...
- To build distribution, people need to think I'm worth following.
- To be worth following, I need to be interesting.
- To be interesting, I need to be interested in the stuff I'm posting about.
And at the moment, I'm not. I'm just trying to come up with product ideas that I can code, and I inevitably just get bored, and they go nowhere. So I'm going to try a new way.
I'll report back.
